How to Wash Cashmere Clothes

The following cashmere care tips and advice are from experts who have worked in cashmere clothing manufacture for 20+ years so follow them to the letter to ensure you’re cashmere clothes maintain their exquisite softness.

Washing

  • The use of professional dry cleaning is highly recommended in order to keep the cashmere garment in the right shape and to guarantee colour fastness.
  • If you wish to wash you cashmere at home, then always hand-wash to give the material the best chance of maintaining its appearance.
  • Gently place your garment in 30C lukewarm water, preferably with specific cashmere detergent, without rubbing or wringing the item.
  • Never use washing powder or bleach when washing cashmere products.
  • Always rinse items thoroughly with clean water until the cashmere washing detergent is cleared from the garment and the water runs clear.
  • Gently wrap the garment in a dry cotton towel to release the excess water from the fabric but do not wring out.
  • Lay the damp item to dry on a flat surface without stretching, at room temperature, away from direct heat and sunlight to ensure natural drying occurs.
  • If piling occurs, it is easiest to remove the pilling when the garment is still wet (more info below).
  • If necessary for complete smoothness, press the item using a cool iron with a damp cloth between the iron and the garment.
  • If washed, dried and stored correctly, cashmere clothing softens even further in time and so grows better with age.

Usage & Storage

  • After the first few times of wearing cashmere products, especially under other clothes, small balls (pilling) may appear on the surface of the garments. Pilling is not a quality defect, but it is the natural characteristic of cashmere (so you can be sure it is 100% pure cashmere). You only need to clean the garment and remove pilling by gently brushing the surface with a cashmere comb once in a while for the first few wears after which you will soon find that the pilling becomes less frequent before disappearing completely.
  • Ideally store your cashmere clothing flat in a bag with cedar balls to keep the cashmere beautifully soft and to deter moths.
  • Perfumes with strong colour should not be used on the cashmere garments from a close distance.
